Can these be considered in returns
1)My friends parents came to US to visit him and were here for a month or so. What are the returns he can ask for while filing his tax returns? Can he ask for returns on their travel tickets from home country to US? They also traveled within US.

    2) My friend has been supporting his brother ( age 21) for his education. Can his brother be regarded as a dependent? The expenses incurred on his education and stay... can it be included in the tax returns?

3)He himself is also attending school for a masters degree along with a full time job. Can he ask for returns on the fee that he pays for his own education?

    4) I am not aware of all the items for which I can ask for returns. Could you please suggest me a web sie or send me a link... where can I get knowledge on these.

    1) Nothing

    2) If your friend provides more than 50% of his brother's support for the year he can be claimed as a dependent

    3) Some education expenses are deductible

    4) IRS.gov

First, lets get some definitions set up. A return is a document you file with the government that reports income and deductions and calculates taxes owed or overpaid. A refund is the amount of taxes you might have had withheld or prepaid over your actual tax liability. A deduction is an amount that is deducted from your total income to arrive at your taxable income. A credit is an amount applied to the amount of taxes owed to reduce the final total.

Now, I'm not a CPA and I know little about taxes for foreign nationals. But I would doubt if travel expenses to your home country would be considered a valid deduction against US taxes.

    1) I agree with Scott; nothing!

    2) No, he cannot be claimed as a dependent, because he is probably on a F-1 visa and is NOT considered to be a resident of the U.S.

    3) If YOU are in the country to attend school, YOU are also on a F-1 visa and are considered a non-resident alien. That means you CANNOT claim any education credit or deduction.
