    Plumbing vent problem toilet
We have a bathroom in the garage. The vent pipe does not go through the roof. We often have a strong odor in the garage (and adjoining office) and the toilet gurgles sometimes.
Do we need to run the pipe through the roof or will a vent filter sufice?

Hi Midwestmelissa and Welcome to The Plumbing Page. At AskMeHelpDesk.com. That open pipe is spewing sewer gas in your home. Sewer gas is a health hazard to your family and the methane content makes it explosive. You have two options,
    1. Get a roof boot and take the pipe out past the roof line **OR**
    2. Tie the pipe back to a existing roof vent in the attic. Your choice. Good luck, Tom

Where exactly does the vent terminate? Yes the vent should go up and out the roof And no, a filter will not work here. Please let us know where the vent is now and we will take it from there.
