    Tax filling for the year 2011
    I'm l2 visa holder came to US with my husband on March 2011.I'm not working and my SSN is under process.Is it mandatory to file extension within April 17? What is the deadline for Manual filling?what should be done to get the refund?please help...

    What refund? I thought you don't work.

    Or are you asking about a joint return with your husband?

    IRS will accept a Return when a SS is not indicated as long as you can explain the problem.

    I doubt your request for an extension will be approved because IRS won't get it until after the filing deadline. You can't wait for the deadline to pass and then request an extension.

    First, you are dual status aliens and your husband would need to file a dual status return unless you add a statement to your return that you both choose to be treated as residnet aliens for the entire year. You then have to file a joint return as resident aliens reporting worldwide income.

    If you are getting a refund, you would not need an extension. If you owe taxes, you should file as soon as possible. I would suggest to wait for the SSN and then file.
