Which W2 and 1099 to file for state Income Tax Return (Paper filing)
Could someone please provide answers for the following questions?

    1) I used Taxact to complete my part year residence state income tax return. The program says to attach W2 and also 1099 forms if I go with paperfiling. Does it mean all my 1099s? I have 1099-div, 1099-G, 1099- etc etc.

    2) I have to file 2 part year residence state income tax return, 1 for NJ and 1 for Virginia. Do I need to include all the W2s for each tax return? I have a W2 from NJ and a W2 from Virginia.

    Thanks

    John

    1. The only 1099's you must attach are those that show income tax withheld. For most people there is no tax withheld on dividends and interest, so no need to attach the corresponding 1099-DIV or 1099-INT. But it is common for income tax to be withheld from retirement income, so the correspondding 1099-R's would have to be attached. Same with some 1099-MISC forms.

    2. For state returns you should attach the W2 for that particular state. So no need to attach the VA W2 on your NJ return, nor the NJ W2 on your VA return.

Thanks. Last question. Do I need to include a copy of my federal return with each state return if I paper file the state returns?
