I purchased the vehicle in November of 2011, and registration was paid by previous owner and it's valid until June of 2012... Now, I went to DMV next day after the purchase, and paid taxes and some other fees (could be part of registration as well... just can't remember now)...

Can I claim VLF tax refund on this year return?

Are you a CA resident? If so, the vehicle license fee (VLF) as listed on the registration billing notice from the DMV is deductible on Schedule A of your federal return as well as on the CA tax return.
