Little girl raised in mansion to have cold heart poor boy
It's a classic, a rich old woman who had been "stood up" on her wedding adopts a little girl and raises her to have a "cold heart" towards men. She hires a poor neighbor boy to come and play with the little girl so she can learn how to be mean to him. The boys father is a criminal but the boy does not know that and he sends a fortune, without giving his name as benefactor to send the boy to school and make him a "gentleman." The boy thinks the money came from the old woman. He always loves the girl but she has a cold heart. The crazy old woman dies, I think in a fire in their mansion.
