Can the IRS force a parent to claim a child as a dependent?
I'm subject to AMT and my child is a college student. If I claim my child as a dependent I cannot receive any education credits becuae of income level and AMT. Also, since I'm subject to AMT I receive 0 benefit to the exemption from claiming my child as a dependent. Can I chose not to claim my child as a dependent?

If I don't claim her a s a dependent she can then claim education credits for her college expenses.

    Yes, that IS true.

However, it is possible that your child CANNOT qualify for REFUNDABLE portion of the American Opportunity Credit. Have her read the criteria for the credit carefully before claiming it.
