Wow! That is an awesome piece! It is unique for sure. I first thought it might be an old phone station, but I see no holes for wires. If it's original, it is surely special, unique and valuable.
We can only take some guesses here on this site (or any site) so I highly suggest that you take it to 2-3 local antique dealers to find out it's age, value and origin.
I think you have a prize with that item if it's more than 150 years old.
Please take these photos to your local public library. A reference librarian will help you identify the time in which it was made and also the style. From there you can figure out its value. (If your library is too small, you may have to go to a larger one.) Also, the library will have the names of antique furniture dealers to whom you can send the photos for more specific information regarding interest in the piece and how/where to sell it.
In this area (Chicago), there are dealers who will come to your home to evaluate furniture and other collectibles/antiques. That may be possible where you live.
Excellent! I have only been a member for less than an hour and I am absolutely thrilled to have found this site! You guys are great!
Welcome to our site! I'm glad you've had a good experience so far. Be sure to read our Ask Me Help Desk Blog!!
It appears, and I'm only guessing, to be a chamber pot cupboard. Although the shelf is puzzling because you wouldn't want the pot to slide off when the door opened.
Whatever it is it is certainly a beautiful piece.
You got my curiosity up, so I did a Google search. Try chamber pot cupboard and chamber pot cabinet and you'll get quite a few hits.
When you find out exactly what it is let us know. And if it is a chamber pot cupboard I suppose the small enclosed shelf would be for the Sears catalog. Chuckle, chuckle.
>Smile< Thanks for the laugh. I will do a Google it and plan on contacting a few antique dealers in the near future. I like the library idea as well. Great ideas guys!. I can't get the ideas of seeing IF a Sears catalog would fit in there... ;)
