I have a 18.5 hp 917.273640 riding mower that won't start. It has fire to the plug, new gas, used fuel conditioner during the off months. If you crank and crank you get a real loud back fire. Ideas?

Sounds like the flywheel key has sheared .
But I would have my valve clearance checked .
