Garage door will only open if I hold the opener button. It closes fine, but will only open if I hold the opener button down. The remotes do not work the same and will not open the door at all.

Before we get going on the opener lets look at the door itself. Pull the emergency cord that disconnects the opener from the door. Lift the door by hand. How many lbs of force, roughly, do you think you applied to raise the door? Does you door have torsion springs or long coil springs along the track?

If you have an electronic lock button check that. If electronically looked most garage doors will close with the remote but will not open. What brand? When electronically locked, think Craftsman will close with the hard wired wall control, but will only open if you hold the open button.
