When I cut my heat on or turn the thermostat up the inside unit works and blows heat, after a couple minutes the outside unit starts up but the heat stops, what is the problem? I got up this morning both running but no heat, practically just the fan, but all worked fine until the outside kicks in then the heat stops, this was on a low 60 night and just now tried it again before going to bed, same thing, heat to start with, but stopped when the unit outside come on

Possible reversing valve problem. Let me ask you a couple of questions.

1. do you have aux heat strips with your heat pump - or do you know?

2. Let your unit rest for an hour or so. Turn on heat at thermosat. Go outside and do you hear/see compressor and condenser fan motor running?

3. if yes for both does the air blowing out the top of the unit feel warm or cold or can't tell?

4. can you feel the refrigerant pipes? What does the suction line (big one) feel like and the liquid line (small one) feel like?

2. let it rest all day, the unit outside is delayed but comes on, when it does the heat stops. It feels like only the fan inside running. Emergency heat workks. Do it manually.
3. check that tomorrow, but its suppose to be warm tomorrow, probably can't tell

I have a Bryant heat pump (7 years old) and recently had it serviced when it wasn't cooling. The technician said it was low on coolant and that it should be fine. No leaks were detected via his nose. After a few days, I called to report that the cooling was still inconsistent. Another technician came to the house late in the day and this time removed a panel and hooked up some gauges. He reported to my wife that he had to remove some coolant to "tweak" the system since it consists of a blend of coolants. It is now running better but I am not convinced it runs at peak efficiency. A recent hot spell proved it when it did not keep the temperature at the setting of 76 degrees and would sometimes climb to 80 degrees. In the morning it would catch up. Prior to this I had no problems. I also notice that there is less condensation on the coil casing mounted above the furnace. Is this a common problem trying to "tweak it" to it's maximum spec.
