I have a friend who had to go out of town to do a job and her dr wanted proof of it for the next appointment, Is this a privacy infringement on the dr's part ? She is not with a company and she needed a early refill for one day early and it was never a big deal to have it done . She is upset because she doesn't think the dr has the right to ask about it . She had made a complaint about this dr before and thinks she is just trying to get at her .

It is not entirely clear to me but was your friend asking for an early refill of a prescition, if so which med? Doctors can ask patients almost anything, if the patient doesn't accept this the patient can look for another doctor, if I am reading you right.

So mysticone, did I just get a bad mark from you or someone else? I have been waiting to hear back from you.

Nope. The doctor has an obligation to not over-prescribe. If the friend is asking for an early refill, requiring proof of this claimed upcoming trip is entirely reasonable.

I agree - and I'm braced for the next one. In a perfect world the "friend" would request the Pharmacist to fill it one day early OR give her one pill in advance. The Pharmacist would then contact the physician. This sounds like this particular prescription had expired.

The "friend" can also go wherever it is the "friend" is going, contact a Pharmacy there on the day she is out of medication and ask the two Pharmacies to arrange for a one-day supply.

You don't call your Physician and ask him/her to call the Pharmacist to ask him/her to give you one pill. You go to the Pharmacy and ask - unless you already know what the answer will be.

My suspicion (after living in the world of Pharmacy for a number of years)? OP has abused or this is not the first time she's needed her medication early. It's also not my first rodeo (thank you, Doctor Phil).

Agree, to answer you question, no it is not any violation of any privacy. In fact anyone can ask anything, you of course do not have to tell them.
