I adopted a jack russell terrier... The most adorable and playful dog, for a first dog he's great! I play with him 1-3 hours out the day sometimes even more, he's 7 weeks old and has been neutered... I had Rocco for a week trying my best to potty train him I let him eat and drink as he pleases really don't have a time frame.. I have pee pads, and he pees around it not on the pee pad.. He pees as he pleases any where he wants I try to discipline him by saying NO ROCCO NO! And a few times I give him a little smack on his behind... I take him outside he doesn't pee he comes inside the household he pees... My bottom line is what the heck is the best way to get my little Rocco to understand he can't just pee and poop anywhere he wants... If anyone has experience in this situation and please help or if you have any great ideas please reply thanks for reading...

The first mistake you are making is letting him free feed and free access to water. This all needs to be put on a schedule and monitored closely to avoid problems such as this.

I like to feed a meal in the morning and a meal around 5 or 6pm. With a last drink at 7 or 8pm depending on your bedtime..

With potty time, you need to go out with him. Puppies have the attention span of a gnat. If something grabs their attention, they're not going to go potty until you get them excited in the home or you start to not pay close attention to them. There have been many days and nights, both cold and hot that I stood outside repeating the command "go potty".. And that is something you're going to have to do to successfully house train your dog.

I am not a fan of pee pads.. especially if you are trying to house train them. Do you want your dog to pee and poop in your house 3 years from now? Using potty pads, dogs have a hard time figuring out where they are allowed to poop and pee. Dogs don't understand that that one specific corner in a specific room is the only place they are allowed to potty.

If you don't have a crate, get one. THey are a wonderful house training tool. It keeps your dog in one location, it keeps a mess in one location and it saves your house from a growing puppy. It will also teach your dog to stay clean. With house training, it is more than just teaching them verbally to go outside and go potty. You are also teaching their bowels and bladder to hold it.

Is the puppy left home a lot? If so, keep in mind that puppies can only hold it for as many hours as they are old in months.. Example, 3 month old puppy can only hold it max. 3 hours.

I think if you give you're a puppy a feeding schedule that will help you out for over half of the problems you are having. The other half would be to throw away all your pee pads and start taking puppy outside with you and praising when he goes potty.

Before beginning the training remember that some puppies pick up very quickly whereas others tend to lag behind a bit.if your puppy falls under the second category do not lose heart have a little patience.apart from patience you will have to have two other qualities tobe a successful house trainer you should be vigilint and be consistent with your training actions.
CRATE TRAINING
You will be glad to know that puppies instinctiffly want to kee their den say living area clean will try to avoid peeing and defectating where they sleep.the idea of buying a crate for your puppy is to make the den its own little are where it can sleep and rest well.do not evr use the crate as a punishment area for the puppy when it commits a mistake.in due corse your puppy should beable to love its crate as its sweet little corner.your crate should be placed in an area that is easily accesible to outdoors.the crate may contain the puppies food trays and toys in short make it its living room.remember one thing when you are buying a crate.the crate should be large enough so that it can accommodate your puppy when it grows into a full grown dog.it should be wise to have a divider in the crate.the divider will ensure that the puppy doesn't pee on one part of the den and sleep on the other part.as your puppy grows you can move the divider to provide greater room for it.treat the puppy when staying in the crate and do not treat it if it loiters unnessicerryly.this will save you from buying a larger crate later on.buying an appropriate crate is the first step in puppy housetraining.
POTTY TRAINING
While thinking how to house train a puppy you should fix a peeing spot for the puppy yourself.I reatrite that you should fix the puppys peeing spot and not the puppy.I suggest your puppys peeing spot should be in the backyard and it should be easily accesible.I have seen some dog owners to create an area say 2 by 4 at the backyard and fill it with gravel and wood chips.they consitently take their dogs to that area until the dog learns that when it has to pee it has to pee in that demarcated area only.while training a puppy remember that the peeing spot should be within your house premisis.it should not upset your neighbour and the puppy should not get infected from the other dogs excectra.it is best if you can teach your puppy to use a door bell used speccificaly for your puppys nature call.that way you can reduce your time and attention when guissing when your dog needs to go out.
THE PEEING SCENT
Do you know that dogs love to pee where either they or others have peed before and with their accute sense of smell they can find such spots easily you can use this charecteristics of puppies to your advantage.you may purchase a towel and wipe the pee of your dog and drop it at the peeing spot you have fixed.there is a fair chance that the dog will sniff the cloth and get the scent.lead the dog with the scent of the peeing spot.practice this act repetitly until your dog learns to pee in the pre deciding peeing spot.
THE ROUTINE
When you housetrain a puppy it is important that you train it under a fixed routine.at the outset you need to remember that puppies pee very frequently.the retention power of puppies is very low especcialy before they reach 4 to 5 months of age.a puppy needs to pee at least 10 to 12 times a day and you need to take it out at regular intervels of 2 hours.this means that you need to wake up in the night at regular intervals also.there is no alternative to it.you also need to cultivate your skills to watch your puppys body language prior to peeing.some puppies go around in circles some sniff and some try to stand on its rear legs.each puppy has a unique way to indicate that it wants to pee.these signs should alert you at the beginning that yo need to take it out.
THE POTTY COMMAND
While housetraining your puppy teach it to poop at the instance of your command.you may use a phrase such as go poop.try to put this command into the puppys head and every time the puppy relives itself at the utterence of the command cuddle it and give it some sort of reward.remember to use the same phrase again and again.in due course your puppy will only defecate at your command and at your chosen spot.in spite of all your vigilance you may make mistakes and your puppy might make a mess do not punish the puppy because it was you who failed to notice the early signs.a punished puppy learns to hide from you next time he needs to go out.the thumb rule is praise the puppy immensivly if it does the right thing as intended at the right place reprimad yourself if you overlook te puppys early signs or it messes up the carpet.you also need to clean the spot througly if it messes up.choose a cleaning product that not only cleans spotlessly but also leaves no odor.remember that the odor is more harmful than the stain.your puppy will defecate again at that preticular spot if it smells the odor.
THE NEED FOR PATIENCE
While rearing your puppy you need to have a lot of patience.patience should be your mantra while you bring it up.do not scold the puppy if it pees too often.it needs time before the puppys bladder gets bigger and it gets more mature mentally.the puppies physical and mental development and its training will go hand in hand.soon your rustic puppy will transform into your little darling that knows house etiquits.theres just one little mistake your making you have to schedule your puppies feeding time good luck with you puppy :)
