Has anyone ever heard of screwing down through the floor of a copper pan to hold it in place while they solder the drain in place? I saw a plumber doing this recently and thought it was crazy but he told me this is the correct way to do it. I would have thought that putting 4 holes in the base of a pan to hold it in place was a major no no. Does anyone know if type of installation is normal or not?

Is this a washer overflow pan or what? Some custom shower pans are copper before they mud them, is that what you saw?

Answer Ballengerb1's question, but NO, never heard of anything like you describe and I have installed 50-60 copper shower pans, so either the guy is NUTS or something is missing in the information you saw or are presenting!

Hi Ballengerb! It is a copper pan for a master shower stall. Mud will be installed afterwards and then tile, a typical installation. I have just never seen any plumber screw down through the base of a copper pan before. He claimed he did it to hold the pan down while he soldered the drain place!! A line of BS I believe. He has 4 holes approx an inch away from the drain.
I have a photo of it but have no idea how to post it. I just wondered had any other plumber ever screwed down a copper pan to hold it in place while they solder the drain in place? I have met many plumbers on sites over the years and have never seen anyone do this to a pan.

Like Mark. I've formed shower pans out of sheet lead, copper, Compiseal and some black material that I forget the name and have never had to poke holes in them to screw them to the floor. The experts are correct, this sounds NUTS!
