Grandma must be remembering things differently. Here is a listing of the first issue, largest bill was $1000. 1861 C.S.A. Currency - First Issue The 5 other issues were smaller with big bills being $100. In 1861 the confederate states autoized printing $1,000,000 in notes but not just for a single note.
