I am changing my kitchen lighting from one central traditional fluorescent tube fitting to 10 x GU10 downlights, each with an 11 watt compact fluorescent bulb. So the starting point is a single switch and wiring to the ceiling rose 'junction box' with two wires out to the existing fluorescent light fitting. The downlights are fire resistant and double insulated so do not require an earth. How should I run the cable from the central rose junction box to each of the downlights?

Just need a 2 wire cable plus earth, (cap the earth ground if not needed) , from ceiling rose 'junction box' to each new fixture, in any format or path.

If you mean mechanically, then we need to know more details of the structure and finish of the room.

My question was specifically on the wiring connections. I am likely to have 2 runs of 3 lights and 1 run of 4. From your answer I take it that each run of lights can have it's own wire back to the junction box (I am going to install a more robust junction box in place of the ceiling rose and fix it to a joist), with the wire daisy chained from the junction box to each light in turn. Where I need to cross a joist I will drill a single hole for the wire to pass through.

You can daisy chain from the JB to light to light, if you like. No need to bring all cables from each light back to the JB.
