OK, my favorite of all time is Desk Set with Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. She matches brains with him, librarian memory and organization vs. computer design. 19 FIFTY 7!!
My hero these days is Tina Fey in 30 Rock, running CBS with all those triumphs and setbacks. She makes sure the scripts are never too too any 'cause' whether it's gender or race or nerd or country boy or boss or lackey or any group at all, clever and funny.
Oops, that's not a romantic comedy.
I haven't watched a romantic comedy in a gazillion years. I can't even name one. That one with Mel Gibson where he can read womens' minds? Ugh. So.. in your face obvious. Probably the last one I saw, slathered all over the TV.

Is there a time frame you're focusing on? Certainly the perception and the portrayals have changed over time. I personally think the large majority of this genre reflect a "desperate" woman but that has changed in recent decades, trending slightly toward a more independent vibe in the female leads.

I watch them occasionally as I read magazines--and occasionally set down the lit--to observe the "lighter" side of life and roll my eyes at the silliness of it all.
