Most owners and trainers recommend feeding twice per day. The actually amount varies with the breed and size of the dog. Your pit probably needs at least 2 cups of high quality food twice a day. I always tell people to read the ingredients of any food. If the first thing listed is wheat just put it back on the shelf.

2 cups? That's a bit much.. That's four cups of food a day...

1.5 cups twice a day.. or maybe even 1 cup of food twice a day...

An active Pit needs about 1775 calores a day. The volume of food varies with the type and brand of food. My Plott Hounds are 62 lbs and each eat 1 1/2 cup twice a day.

Volume greatly depends on the dog. I have a 5kg dog here who eats twice as much as my 10kg dogs and he is still skinny. You start with a recdommended amount and adjust accordingly as the dog gains or loses weight.

Twice a day feedings are best as it can reduce the chance of bloating.
