    Media state disconnected
In ip config, cmd, it says that the media state is disconnected. I've tried typing in ipconfig /renew, and that doesn't seem to do anything. I'm new at this, and would like some help. What do I do to enable the media so that is connected. Thank you.

Check all your cables as that what Disconnected means.
Renew won't work while your system doesn't have a network connection.

It says that the broadcom 802.11g/b WLAN is disconnected. And I'm currently connected to the internet via netgear router. It's just when I try to connect using wireless that nothing happens.

In that case it means you are NOT connected wirelessly.
Do you have a wireless router or access point ?

I a netgear router and I don't know what an access point is.
I currently have a cat5 running from the cable box to the router to the laptop.
And the network card is built in.

    Yep that's sounds right.
In that case don't worry about the messge for wireless as you are connected fine.
