Hi, I am a nursing student and I was wondering what was your opinion on giving prophylaxis antibiotics before incisions to reduce the risk of infection compared to giving prophylaxis antibiotics after cord-clamping in mothers having a cesarean section? From what I have read about this before and after prophylaxis antibiotics can help the mother but can mask an infection in the newborn.

    Thank you.

We always give 2 grams of Ancef during a C/S.

If you are curious about that, what about giving IV Ampicillin to laboring women who are positive for GBS. Wouldn't that mask an infection in the newborn as well? Just food for thought.

Notice my signature, I am an L&D nurse.
