97 Chevy Cavalier Engine light won't go off.
Hi. Everyone I have a 97 Chevy Cavalier with a engine light on that won't go off, I recently got an oil change but I did not change out the oil filter the coolant is fine and the car is not over heating. I checked to see if the car needed more oil but that is also fine. What else should I do or could do. The engine light won't go off and I afraid to drive it anywhere from fear of the car breaking down on me in traffic. Please send some advice my way or help thanks.

    1. Check all under-hood and under-dash fuses with a test light or multimeter:

    2. Attach scanner to data link connector and see if any codes are being thrown. Autozone will do this for free.

    Hi,
The light will come on when you need the oil changed or service. After the service is done the computer has to be reset. The least inexpenesive way is, disconnect the positive side of the battery let it sit for 20 seconds and reconnect. Almost all GM cars are set up that way so that should work for you. If it doesn't in the owners manual look for the section on reset the computer, usually it is done by turning to key to the on position and off then pressing the brake pedal.

I have a 97 cavalier and the light has been going on and off for months at a time for the last 8 years. I brought it in at least 6 times over that span and every time I did they said it was the vacuum/o2 sensor/or they didn't know and they turned it off. I have never had a problem with the car and have gotten used to the engine light being on. The car now has 210k miles on it and is still running well. Have it checked, but realize it will probably come back on.

I'm curious if your so afraid of the car breaking down on you... WHY did'nt you change the 2.00 filter when you changed the Oil??
The most important thing is changing ALLLLL the oil and FFFFilters.

Don't start but turn key over and pump the break 5 times and then start the car
