The error message: Setup cannot write to file VISd7a5.TMP appears when I run setup for Direct X 7. I'm installed a program that runs in Windows 95/98 on my system which is Windows XP. I tried to run the program anyway using the compatibility wizard and it won't run. It says "the program" is not a valid Win32 application. The video info/instructions on the games run without a hitch using the Window media player but the games on the disk won't run.

What can I do?

486 pentium or better, 33MHz
5MB hard disk space
8MB RAM
Super VGA graphics, 640x480, 256 colors
2X or faster CD-ROM drive
Windows compatible sound card

As DirextX 7 is seriously out of date and been replaced with 10 and 11 you really do not want, or need, to install it.
What game is this as there may well be a work around for installing on newer systems ?

No, that's not your actual problem at all, but without knowing what you are trying to install it's difficult to help fully.

The application error is a red hearing and best ignored..

I have had some success installing older games by setting both the install exe and the run exe created after install to compatibility for win95. Win 95 was Win16 and 98 was 16 or 32 capable. If the games requirements say 95 and not 98 then 16 or win95 compatibility is a must. Sometimes other files need to be set too. For instance, if setup.exe is set to 95 comp but it triggers another exe or msi then that one needs its comp set too.
