How do I get the "empty" icon to appear beside delete trash icon to appers so I do not have to actually go into the deleted trash-highlight all the delted items-then deleting them this way.

With the spam folder, all I have to do is hit empty and then delete permanently without going though additional steps

Have you tried RIGHT clicking ?
I'm assuming you are talking about AOL mail here, as you haven't said which application it is.
