    Oscar-nominated songwriting brothers?
I'm pretty sure how I'm going to answer this question, but I thought I'd throw it out for comment.

In a newspaper trivia contest, this is a clue:

"Name the brothers who, between them, earned eight Oscar nominations for Best Song."

Here are the only brothers I can find who were nominated this category. I note that the Gershwins and the Newmans add up to eight, but in that case, the question should read "among them," not "between them."

Arthur and Ralph Freed - 2 nominations
George and Ira Gershwin - 4 nominations
Alfred and Lionel Newman - 4 nominations
Richard and Robert Sherman - 10 nominations
Mack and Hal David - 12 nominations

If anyone can tell me someone I missed (by virtue of having different last names, for example), I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance for your help!

Bill, I am only finding 8 actual nominations for songs by the Sherman Brothers, not 10. Make sure you are not including nominations for best score.

I was sort of hoping you'd try to help with this question, Ruby!

I count five Sherman songs that were nominated:

    "Chim-Chim-Cher-ee"
    "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang"
"The Age of Not Believing" (from BEDKNOBS & BROOMSTICKS)
    "The Slipper and the Rose"
"When You're Loved" (from THE MAGIC OF LASSIE)

How does this list differ from what you have? I'm getting mind from the oscar.org site.

Thanks! Hope to hear from you shortly!

Hi Bill, sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

I reviewed my source and yours. Mine has some faulty info. I am inclined to stick to the Oscar website info. So, I concur with your listing.

I am going to do some additional investigation and see if I come up with anything different than what you have. I will get back to you as soon as I can.

    Dear Ruby,

Thanks for checking. I've been spending a little time on and off, and I really think the question is wrong (as opposed to being a tricky question, like the actress one). SO I'm going to list the songwriting brothers and hope for the best.

I'll let you know next week the answer to the actress question.

    Thanks again!

Okay Bill. Yes, something appears to be off about the question.

And, yes, don't tell me anything until after the deadline. I think other people are trying to find answers to the same contest. I have seen some unusually worded postings in the past couple of days.

"Unusually worded postings" - yep! And you're likely to see their number increase in the next week. (Deadline is February 28 at 6 p.m. EST) I just found more than a dozen from the quiz.

I'm torn between my desire to help people (and thereby show off what I know) and my understanding that every correct answer puts them in more direct competition with me!

And I guess there's a part of me that's being snarky, because I found the answers through my own research. I only came on this forum because of the one actress question and to double-check about the songwriting brothers question.

This is much more than you want to know, right? <g>

I couldn't resist answering the one Springsteen question, though.

You are too funny! Just remember, every time you help someone, that Hollywood trip becomes more of a dream, than the reality you were hoping for! ;)
