    F1 student on opt tax return?
    Hi,

    I had 2 questions with regard to my tax filing :

    I am from India and was a full-time F-1 student from August 2008 until May 2011 beyond which, I worked in my university until October 2011 under F-1 OPT. In October 2011, I got a job and am continuing working for my job on F1 - OPT status. So because of this I have 2 W-2 forms I.e one from my university and one from my new employer.

    1. So when I file for my taxes, do I need to fill in two 1040 NR EZ's or do I combine the wages and with-holding and file them as one?

    2. Where can I get information about the deductions that I can use so that I can maximize my tax return?

    Thanks a lot.

    You must file nonresident tax return and form 8843. You only file one tax return and combile both the wages and withholdings.
    As you are from India you will get standard deduction as itemized deduction. Your U.S. Tax Return: U.S. Tax Filing Requirements for Non-Residents

    Thanks a lot to both of you.

    Generally, my university has their own tax filing software which they send out to us and it automatically fills out the forms which we need to print out and e-mail. Can I include the wages , federal and state with holding from the W-2 from my employer?

    Also, last year I paid federal tax whereas all my friends who were earning the same amount as me got 600 odd $ back. Is there someway to re-file my taxes and access the forms I had submitted lat year?

    @MukatA

    It would be really great if you could explain what the difference is between standardized and itemized deduction?

    Thanks for all the help and quick replies.

    Your friends probably filed INCORRECTLY as residents, which is why they got refunds.
