I read this book back in college and it was wonderful - unfortunately I've forgotten the title and author. The story was based on a man and ultimately his wife who were forced to start over again in a new life repeatedly. In some cases they started over in their new settings with nothing but the clothes on their backs - the only thing that translated to each new life ended up being gold. Once they realized that they ensure the wife had a gold necklace every time. It's driving me crazy to figure out who wrote this book and the title. Any help would really be appreciated.

Found it! It was Job: a Comedy of Justice written by Robert Heinlein.
