Hi I have a butterfly carp 5ins that is floating on its side on the top of the tank
    Hi
I have a butterfly carp about 5ins floating on the top of the tank and is having trouble swimming to the bottom I have put it in some freash water as the tank was a bit dirty and have some peas for it to eat as I have read problems on this and that's what it says to do,
My problem is the fish can't get to the peas I have reduced the water to about 3ins is this right?
I don't think my fish has long please help :(

I'm not a carp expert but I do have a long history with keeping and caring for all sorts of fish. Unfortunately, what you are describing sounds like the fish is dying and there isn't much you can do if that is the case.

    I'm sorry.

Oh very sad :( the fish is not that old what would have caused this?

Well, you said the water was dirty. That COULD be a cause if it was bad enough. On the other hand, fish are fairly complicated and many things can go wrong with them. It could be a disease, age, parasites... I can't really say for sure.

I hope I'm wrong and it lives also.

    Good luck.

Slowly add fresh water back into the tank and check all the levels (ph, nitrate etc).

Unfortunately few people realize just how sensitive some fish can be to water conditions. They can bounce back from spiked levels if you get onto it quick enough.
