Took dog to vet yesterday since he had not eaten anything in 48 hours (he is diabetic) Vet gave him 3 shots and a special food. He won't take a bite of anything not even boiled chicken but he is drinking water but not as much as he was yesterday. We are coming up on 72 hours since his last meal.I'm wondering if I should call the vet back or am I over reacting?

Ask your vet about Glucoensure to assist with the health and well being of your diabetic dog. I know it is upsetting, and he should be eating. Did the vet suggest regular insulin injections?

Yes Chad already take 2 insulin shots per day. We actually had to take him back to vet this afternoon. I was able to get a urine specimen before we went and sure enough it show infection. We got a big shot of kelflex and he was put on "Nutri-Cal" which so far I have had to squirt down his throat. So far it is staying down. We are suppose to have another urine specimen checked tomorrow because of the sugar as well as the infection.

I admire you for your determination. Caring for a diabetic pet is not easy. You have not mentioned how old ? What breed? Just curious because it may help others inquiring, shirlsue.

Chad is registered as a toy poodle but he is more the size of a miniature and he is 5 yrs old. It has just now been 1 yr since the diabetes was discovered. He has had 4 episode of pancreatitis since. This is the first time he has had any infection of bladder kidneys.

Diabetic animals that don't eat are not sitting in a good boat. You need to talk to your vet about this and get your dog some food.

The only problem with giving the "normal" foods that entice dogs to eat is the fact that he is diabetic. And he sounds like a pretty bad diabetic.

You need to contact your vet. There aren't any answers or advise that anyone online can give you. He needs to eat. You don't have the type of dog that allows you to sit around waiting for answers on the internet. The only option for you is a vet.

To lucky098, I am hardly sitting around waiting for answers on the internet. We have had chad to the vet twice in 24 hours and still have to go again tomorrow.yesterday I spent 64 dollars for 2 shots and some special dogfood made just for diabetics which he will not take a bite of. I have no idea what the cost was for today, Vet just sent us home and said we'd settle up later. At any rate I am sorry if I am not suppose to be here chatting about my ill Buddy. I thought this was a place to do just that. I am offended by your response.This dog has the best care available along with a diet of boiled deboned chicken, brown rice and fresh carrots twice a day. And I understand you wanting to know "why" your dog is doing what you're doing.. but the reality is, you should only be discussing his possible outcomes and "why not's" with your vet.

Never once did I state that your dog was eating right. I just stated that sick dogs can't get the same treatment as a healthy dog when they don't eat..

I don't doubt your care for your dog. A lot of owners come on here with sick dogs begging for answers from this website.

A lot of times the special diets aren't very palatable to dogs.. Try warming up the kibble in the microwave. See if this prescription food comes in canned food as well, warm that up and mix it in his kibbles. That's really the only additives you can give him besides what you are already feeding him.

I would definitely call the vet back if you didn't already (but I'm sure you have). 72 hours is about the maximum a dog can go without food and it is so very important that a diabetic dog eats. The insulin reacts differently with an empty stomach too. Many vets recommend a reduction in the insulin to 1/2 when they aren't eating to prevent hypoglycemia.

I sure do hope things have improved for your little guy. He sounds very ill.

I think that she is looking for others in the same situation. I too have a type 1 diabetic 11 year old dog. We have been struggling getting her controlled but it is difficult. We take a blood glucose reading from the back of her ear before feeding then feed her and give her insulin based on what she ate... she eats less she gets less insulin... eats more gets more insulin. We also test her 6 hours after feeding to see if she is high or low.If she is high we leave her be and if she is low then we feed her (sometimes by syringe) a small amout of food. We use an app on our phone to track her shot, food, blood sugar readings and exercise. It helps to track it all so you can find where the problem is and then your vet can better assist you : )

Shirlsue- I don't know if you will get this message, but it is worth a try. I am going through a lot with my diabetic dog and right now I am experiencing some of what you have described. I need all the support I can get, and am here to give you all the support I can. My dog just returned home from the vet, third time in 3 days. She is refusing to eat and my have pancreatitis. I am curious as to what you have experienced with your little guy. I hope since your last post, your baby has improved. Hope to hear from you soon.

My diabetic dog stopped eating her special diabetic food, she use to love it! I have to get her to eat even if I have to hand feed her. The less food she eats the worse she feels. Then she wants to eat less. Its an awful circle, but the more she eats the better she feels and then she eats better the next meal. So I do whatever I can to keep her eating.

Here are something's you can mix in a meal to entice them to eat. Don't replace the meal with these, but rather mix it with the normal food. These were approved by my vet:

Fresh boiled string beans
Plain oatmeal with low sodium chicken broth instead of water
Tore up boiled chicken or chicken jerky

Tricks I've used:
Mixing the food up real well so everything tastes like the oatmeal. (she got tired of the oatmeal so this isn't working anymore.)
Making little sandwiches with the good stuff in the middle and the diabetic food on the outside. (she now just rips them open and eats the good stuff, but it still works if I squish it real tight.)

The main thing is to get them to eat so they can get their insulin. Then work with your vet to figure out the cause. Others can go without food, but diabetics don't have that option. I have resorted to even mixing in tiny bits of my dinner in with hers. As long as she eats.

Guess I can't really help because I am in the same boat. I take my chow to the vet too. But it helps to kind of see what other people do. My chow is 10 and we found a month ago she is diabetic and has thyroid and liver issues . I to have trouble getting her to eat she has always been a grazer. No more of that. Vet said I had to get here eating better. But he said for now to give her shot anyway. I can get her to eat in the evening a lot better than in the morning and I have tried all most everything. She would eat nothing this morning. Have found one recipe on web that is good for treats ( even diabetic s) 1/2 cup wheat flour, 2 small jars of meat in baby food and 2 eggs. Mix well , cook on parch ament paper 15 minutes 325, cut in squares. She loves them usually. But not this morning. If you find something that helps you, let me know. Just took her on Friday he said he thought she was much better but here I am today like you. I just want her to get her over this bump in the road. Sorry so long!
