    Month to month agreement
My living situation is a month to month verbal agreement. I've been in the hospital for 20 days. The owner now tells me I have to be out of his house at the end of the month. Rent is paid in full until then. I may be partially disabled and unable to secure another place. Is he able to do this to me under theses circumstances?

Typically with month to month verbal agreements, either party can give a 30-day notice of non-renewal in writing. I'm sorry to say, but the circumstances will not matter to the court.

Did you get a written 30-day notice of non-renewal?

Also we could help you further if you will tell us what state you are in.

Thanks, rick. I did not get a 30 day non-renewal. It was more like two sentences telling me I had to be out at the end of the month. The date was jan. 12th. He has already changed the locks on the house, however, a friend picked up one of the new keys in order to access some essential documents I have there. I live in Boca Raton, Florida

Unfortunately, Florida allows a landlord to give a 15 day written notice to terminate a month-to-month tenancy.

So, mainstream, when did you receive the written notice? If you received it on the 12th, then you must be out by 2 weeks after the 12th. If you are not out by then, the landlord can issue you an eviction notice and proceed from there.

He can't change the locks now nor hold your possessions. Is there more to this story? Was there violence at the building/apartment, or domestic disturbance, or illegal activity with police involvement?
I'm not assuming, just finding this a puzzling situation.

Joy, rick, you guys are terrific. Thanks so much for this input. I have been an excellent tenant as far as I can see. Pay my rent on day 1 and usually in cash. Hold down two jobs and have a fairly active social life. I'm 60 years old. I don't drink or use recreational drugs. I'm hardly ever there. I noticed that this guy was becoming increasingly more irritated by little things I would do, i.e. not hang up my clothes in my room, close the door accidentally too hard, leaving an extra bright light on when I wasn't there, etc. I just took his annoyances like he was too uptight although he never communicated any particular problems to me. This whole get out by the end of the month thing especially when I'm recovering from 2 surgeries has left me feeling so angry, resentful. How can another human on this planet pull something like this on another vulnerable, somewhat helpless human? It makes me crazy to even visit the resentment. Anyway, I just don't see how I can manage to recuperate(2 knee surgeries), do my physical therapy and be expected to move furniture, etc. out by the 31st. It just doesn't seem right.
