I have a 2003 Grand Am and have the opposite problem when it starts none of the dash lights come on and the locks and windows don't work but it will drive for a short disctance then die, I can turn it off and play with the ignition and it will come back and be fine, this happened last year several time then quit and now has started again in the last two days has done it 4 or 5 times. Does the ignition need to be changed?

Yes, you need to replace the ignition switch. It should solve all of those problems. Be sure to disconnect the negative battery cable first.
