    Freelance content writer sites
Hi wonder gal I'm a single mother with a small kid. I can't go out for a regular 9-6 job thus I have chosen to sit home and write, something I am good at. Could you please tell me about sites where they pay some fair money unlike the peanuts they offer at freelancer.com or any other related opportunity.
    Thanks

Unfortunately, there aren't sites that pay well. A friend writes for eHow, so check that out. Do you have a blog or your own web site?

What country/US state are you in?

I subscribe to this newsletter which in every issue (once a week) lists paying markets and guidelines --

Really depends on the site, content and quality.

I strongly recommend you start a blog or web site, maybe about one thing such as being a mother or something each day about India, and monetize the site. Or offer a service such as editing or grammar/ESL help for a fee.

Have you considered writing articles for newspapers or magazines, rather than websites? If your quality is good, the pay is much better. Most journalism is done at the end of a phone, so being at home is not a disadvantage.

The typical format for a feature article is to start with an idea, then interview four or five people who can contribute in some way, perhaps do a little extra research to get the expert/research opinion, and then write a 1000-1500 word article. Ring the feature's editor of your chosen newspaper or magazine first and run your idea by them. If you get a "We'll have a look", write it as you described it, and get it in on time and with the right word count. As soon as it's published, send an invoice.

To add to Eileen's excellent idea, I will also suggest that the preferred/desired articles right now are lists of things, such as -- "10 Reasons I Love Being a Mother" or "The Top 5 Hotels in New York City--and Why" or "Four Easy Things You Can Do Each Day To Lose Weight."

I don't know what you mean by "fair" money, but an excellent place to start is your local newspaper - small town, not big city. They'll accept stories/features over the transom, but it's always a good idea to query the editor. They pay $50-100 for about 1200 words. Not a fortune, but a start, and it's a credit you can later include in your portfolio. Good luck.

Btw, this is for the USA.
