I have completely gutted a 1950''s house basement bathroom. The shower is in the basement, the drain is embedded in the concrete basement floor. In the remodel, I intend to install ceramic tile on the floor of the shower.

Ihave 3 questions.

1. Please confirm that there is no need to install a water proof membrane liner between the concrete and the tile.

2. I also need to increase the slope/pitch of the 5' wide concrete shower floor. I know I need 1/4" to 1/2" drop for each foot. I have been told that simply adding concrete and screeding it off to the proper pitch will bond properly to the existing concrete and accomplish my goal. True?

3. The shower drain is a embedded in the concrete but there is no way to afix a drain screen over the hole (no center or side screw holes). Is there a product that will fit through the new tile, into the existing pipe and provide a water tight seal to drain the water?

Can't help with 1 & 2 but if I can tell you how to secure a strainer to the old drain would that help? They do make strainers with spring clips that you can snap into the opening. What size is the opening ? Why not simply slope to the existing drain and use the old strainer? Cheers, Tom

#2 Indoors with no heavy loads, you might get away with just new concrete over the old, but I would pick up a little Thorobond or competitive bonding agent. Make sure any old paint or dirt is gone.
