Remove freshly applied wood stain from hardwood doors?
Hi I recently applied a coat of a wood stain to one new hardwood door, I am not happy with the colour match which is far darker than my skirtings and surrounds.
Can anyone give me some advice on how to remove the stain and can I use turps to do this or are there other products that are better suited to remove the stainer?

    What type of stain?

Most stains do just that. They stain the wood fibers.Unless u used a stain paint, it has penetrated the wood and can only be removed by bleaching. This would damage the wood fibers and could end up blotchy.

Try rubbing the stained area with a rag damp with laquer thinner.

If it is a wiping stain such a Minwax and is a stain alone, not a stain and sealer combined, use mineral spirits (paint thinner) to remove.
You can even re-wet the dried stain with more stain and then wipe it off.
Wiping stains do not penetrate the wood fibers, it only gets in the scratches lift by sanding. To make a stain come out lighter sand to a finer grit. To make it darker stop sanding at a courser grit. The larger the scratches left by the sanding the more stain will be left when you wipe it off and the darker it will be.

I believe that is a wiping stain. I believe what you call white spirits is what we call mineral spirits.
