What is the difference between a dual core processor and a core 2 duo processor?

While both contain 2 cores, the core 2 duo processors are "newer" technology. They tend to run cooler, require less energy, and are generally quicker than a regular "dual core" processor. Obviously there would be many differences, but these are the basic differences between the two.
