Hello I went to have a broken tooth extracted in hospital and I had 3 injections to numb the pain but I still felt it when the dentist started to pull on the tooth. This made the dentist abort and have to reschedual. I have been on antibiotics now for a week should it still hurt the next time?

A tooth extraction in a hospital? I take it this isn't in the US.
I would guess that either you:
- Take a long time to get numb and didn't wait long enough (like me)
- The dentist did a poor job with the injections
- You 'thought' you felt pain because of the awareness of your jaw being tugged on
- You have infection throughout your jaw
- Combinations of the above.
We can't possibly guess what will happen next time.

Thank you yes I live in england you have two choices nhs which is cheap and hard to come by or private which is very expensive. I guess that it was infection seems as I was put on antibiotics and now the pain hass lessened I do get the feeling that as soon as it gets a good tug that it will hurt instantly. Fear is an issue for me I can't control my body as soon as I sit in the operating chair I start to shake throughout my whole body

Some places will give you nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to put you to sleep for a minute.
It does take a lot of mental determination to BELIEVE that the Novocaine really does work. When you feel the first tug, really ask yourself if it hurts - it shouldn't.
Antibiotics are always given in case of future infection. If they are making you feel better, fine, but the infection will come back unless the tooth is removed.
When I said infection throughout, I meant away from the injections, referred pain. Somehow I don't think that is it.

Ah thank you again but over here putting you to sleep is not done in most places so its injection or nothing. I did what you said the first time round I took about 9 seconds of him pushing down on my tooth and was OK with it but then as I could feel him pulling rather than pushing christ the lord idid I feel it lol.

I had seven teeth pulled today, and some of the teeth hurt in spite of an extra set of injections. I don't know why, but the dental assistant noticed that some of my roots were misshapen: they were curved a bit and a few were curved enough to look like they had little hooks on them. She thought that might be the reason it hurt. The teeth with only one straight root didn't hurt, for the most part.

I had nitrous oxide once. I hated it. It made me feel like I was laying on the ceiling. I felt upside down. The dentist still gave me shots because, he said, the gas didn't really get rid of pain. I believe him, because I felt him give me the shots - but I couldn't do anything about it because I was loopy from the gas.

Back to the subject: I noticed that when I felt the pain, the tooth was pretty close to being half wrenched out of the socket. By the time I was on my last couple of teeth, I realized that if I focused my mind on what it would feel like after the tooth was extracted, I was able to handle it very well. The opposite of the advice I see in so many places to "live in the now". Sometimes, it is better to focus on the more pleasant future (even if that future is only three seconds away).

I forgot to mention that the dental assistant recommended taking three or four Tums half an hour before my next appointment to help minimize the pain. I understand that taking calcium supplements helps minimize the pain, and that Tums has calcium in them. I don't know if this is the reason the assistant recommended them (I didn't think to ask).

Even so, I plan to take a painkiller half an hour before my next appointment. In my opinion this will do two things: It will help minimize the pain if the numbing agent doesn't work perfectly and (since it lasts for 6 hours) by the time I need to take another, the numbing agent will have worn off enough so that I can swallow the pill and water without choking. (I was told to take the painkiller as soon as I got home, but the numbing agent didn't wear off until a few hours after that - the dentist really did all he could to make sure I wouldn't feel pain.) Anyway, I'm not suggesting anyone do this. I'd recommend asking your dentist, first, if it's okay to take a painkiller before having one's teeth extracted.
