My spouse obtained credit cards in her name (vis the internet) where I was the primary card holder and she requested an authorized user card in her name.She ran up $25000 of debt and then had her name removed as an authorized user. The card company never contacted me in any form to ask my permission to add her. Am I liable for the debt?

You will be unless you report that she stole your identity and used it to fraudulently obtain the cards. Even then, you would have a hard time proving it. Where were the bills with your name on them going all this time? You don't get out of the bill without reporting her... somebody is liable and its either you or her.

You don't stand a chance, even if she pretended to be you online (presumably she had access to your password). All the charges appeared on YOUR monthly statement. I take it she didn't rack up 25K in one month.

This was fraud. Have you advised the Police? What did you do when bills came in (in the amount of $25,000) and the charges were not familiar?

I'd contact the credit card company and get the info on the authorization to add her IN WRITING because they will undoubedly sue for the debt and you will need some proof that you never authorized the card, didn't know she had the card, called as soon as you saw the unfamiliar charges.

They will try, and unless the charges were all made within a month or two, most likely they stand a good chance of winning.

But you will need as noted to file a police report for fraud, theft ID and send a copy of it to them.

Then when they sue in court for the money you use it for the defense in court.

So do expect it to go to court.

She told me about it after the fact and the credit card company worked out a repayment plan with us. Basically they froze the accounts.. zero interest and no fees if we would pay them back at a certain amount per month (it was a 5 year pay back plan) We have made 5 months of payments but now we are separated and I cannot afford it on my own. I don't think I can claim fraud at this point as I knew about it. I just wondered if the credit card company was liable since they didn't check with me originally.

But once you made an agreement to pay, you lost any chance of getting out of the debt.

The fact that you are separated has nothing to do with her obligation to continue to help you make payments.

You AGREED to pay them. Anything before that is immaterial.

And how is this related, if it is, to the outstanding warrant for you in Florida?

I think we have either a troll, or someone doing homework... today they post a thread with the information reversed saying HE got the illegal card off her legitimate one.. via fraud... and the amount of the fraud was $8,500

Yes the new thread does seem to be contradictory to this thread.
