They were black now are turning white, does anyone know why? He is getting older and his joints are starting to hurt, Is it because he lays around so much? He has beds in all his laying spots. ANd If there is not a bed I move one to him. I no he has to lose weight and I've been working on that. Thank you for any and all help,

His pads do not hurt.

Not sure what you are calling elbow pads? Does he have no hair at his elbows, and the skin is changing? I wouldn't worry about it. People and dogs do get sore joints as we age. You could get him a waterbed or a heated bed, and could give him glucosamine. Sometimes vets even give cortisone shots. Old dogs do tend to lie around virtually all the time they are not eating or 'going.' Brush him more often as he ages because his old skin doesn't fall off as easily and he can't roll on his back or scratch most other places anymore.

If the skin is turning black take him to a vet if the fur is turning white it is probably cause he is getting old

If by elbow pads you mean the skin on his elbows, is he licking at them and causing them to stay moist? If so the moisture can sometimes cause a grayish/white discoloration. Keep a watchful eye on them, like people dogs can also develop pressure ulcers and if he is keeping them moist it can make matters worse. Keeping his places to lie well padded is the best thing for to prevent ulcers but if they get to the point of bleeding and causing him discomfort you may want to consult your vet.
