Ok I have been working trying to figure this out for about 5 days now. I have 2 computers a desktop gateway on windows xp and a dell xps laptop also on windows xp both computers can see each other in the network neighboorhood but one I try and access either one it tells me network path not found I am connecting though a netgear wireless router the desktop is hardwired and the laptop is wireless need help asap

Do you have any shared resources?

What are you trying to achieve excatly as there may be an easier way.

write after I got done typeing this I found a forum about this I tries doing everything on both computers I finally got the laptop to access the desktop but when I try tp access the laptop from the desktop I still get the same message... the other forum told me to run cmd and put in netsh firewall show portopening verbose = ENABLE but on my laptop that will not come up it keeps telling me there was a error

Ok, let me see if I understand this. You have a shared folder on the laptop, that you want to access from the desktop PC, correct?

Open My Computer and type the share location in the address bar, for example: \\laptop\shared\. Does that work?

A lot of these problems are caused by user permissions. Try this. Open My Computer, and select folder options from the "Tools" drop-down menu. Under the "View" tab, scroll to the bottom and check "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)".

Share whatever folder you wish.

Here is Microsoft's explaination: "Specifies that simplified sharing is enabled. Simplified sharing lets you share folders with everyone on your workgroup or network and make folders in your user profile private. However, if simplified sharing is enabled, you cannot prevent specific users and groups from accessing your shared folders. Clear this check box if you want to set folder permissions for specific users and groups."

OK now I am having another problem now I am getting this message mshome is not accessible you might not have permission to use this network resoure contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access premision

Also still having the network path issue

Mshome is the default workgroup name when Windows is first installed.

Double click on My Network Places. If you have common tasks enabled, then there should be a side window titled Network Tasks. Click on the "view workgroup computers" link. What do you see?

On the laptop or the desktop, hold down your Windows Key and press Pause (Break), release both and up pops the System properties window. Under the computer name tab, click Change and set the workgroup name. It can be any name you like. Default would be mshome.

Do the same for the other computer, using the same name. Reboot both pc's just for the sake of it. Now try to access the shared folders.

I have been there before. You must make sure your firewall is configured to have access to the new machine. Simple as that.
