The main character is named chastity or charity she is the illegitimate daughter of a highwayman, she is raped by a cousin then thrown into jail because she refuses to marry him. A prisoner escapes and takes her with him; they become lovers, they are separated and she becomes the mistress of another man, later on she is reunited with the first man and she has to choose between the two men
