What are you trying to hook up? It could be low voltage but high amperage.

Yes, sometimes the instructions tell you to use a regular wall switch, and sometimes they provide a special switch or thermostat.

The voltage rating of a switch, or any device, is the maximum it could handle safely. A 120 volt rated switch can handle from zero to 120 volts.

A 24 volt rated switch cannot handle any voltage over 24 volts.

This is the same for amperage ratings.
