What is the difference between a dvd recorder and a dvd burner?
What is the difference between a dvd recorder and a dvd burner? I would like to start a movie collection off my flat screen TV. Sometimes I just want to record a program. I have a HD cable box also. Would that be a problem?

A DVD burner is generally a computer drive that can create DVDs from data. A recorder records from a video source.

You don't record from your TV since your TV is a receiver not a broadcaster. You record from your cable box. You can record anything broadcast through the box.

With the exception of some copy-protected materials which might show up as a distorted video, have some message on top of the picture, or some other oddity.
