You do nothing but a nice card because you don't know him well enough yet to buy him a gift; and he probably isn't expecting one anyway. Don't make it difficult for him by giving him something he is obligated to repay. You are getting ahead of yourself.

If he first just asked you out, and that is the first date, I agree, just a card.

Keep it simple. Get him a card. Or, stir things up, surprise him and make him laugh. Send him some red roses
