The function keys are not working gateway laptop?
I bought my boyfriend a gateway laptop.. Whenever he presses the function keys on the game, instead of being a normal "f1, f2...etc" keys, it always does its system functions like contrast, brightness.. How do we get the keyboard to just be a regular FN key?

This problem can sometimes be caused by over usage of the keyboard, which means that you mean need to replace the keyboard on the laptop. And yes you can replace it yourself if you know how or sometimes it could be that the FN key on your keyboard is sticking and causing it. It's a very simple problem to fix is most cases.

I agree with above that the Fn button may be sticking closed.
I might use tuner cleaner and with laptop upside down, spray the contact, let drain back out and don't get your eyes.
Do you have an Fn button on the bottom row?
    This is a New computer?
Worse case, changing a Laptop Keyboard is not usually too difficult, Haven't found one I couldn't change

Many just pop out, can be tricky to do with no sign of damage.

None of the above answers are remotely correect and clearly from people who don't have gateway laptops and have no idea what they are talking about. Recent Gateway laptops have switched the funtionality of the f keys around so their default setting is the bull contract, volume and other functions and to actually use them as F keys you have to do some finger contortionism.

    Press the FN Key+Numlock

As in the (fn) key in the bottom left hand corner of the keyboard next to ctrl. That should switch it back to the regular way of doing it.
