My dash lights in my ford laser have just stopped working, I have read the manual back to front and can't even find a section on dashlights? Does anyone have any idea as to why they have just carked it? Also, there is a strange smell coming from the car it smells electrical like something burning the mechanic told me it was just an old car and they sometimes smell like that but I don't think that's right... Any guesses would be much appreciated!

I'd say that mechanic is missing something... or didn't take the time to look.
You need to get this to someone who specializes in body electrical systems and have them find the problem before you risk total melt-down.
Call around and explain your situation to any shop you talk to. They will let you know if they can tackle this diagnosis.
You shouldn't use the vehicle until you know the extent of the problem.
