New York Tax withholding information on OPT
I am a F-1 student currently OPT and work in New York City.
I went to 4yr college in New York and this is my 4 and a half year living in NY.
I am a single person with no dependent.
I have received my paycheck today and have a hard time figuring out if my tax is deducted correctly.

    My earning is $2751.00

    Taxes:
    Fed Withholding: 515.52
    Fed MED/EE: 39.89
    Fed OASDI/EE: 11.54
    NY Withholding: 154.80
    NY NEW YORK Withholdn: 90.86

    Is this correct?

    Thank you.

The two withholding below should NOT be occurring:

    Fed MED/EE: 39.89
    Fed OASDI/EE: 11.54

These are for Social Security and Medicare taxes, for which you are EXEMPT due to your F-1 status. Download IRS Pub 519 from www.irs.gov and print off pages 53-57; the exemption is explained there, then speak with your employer to get these taxes refunded to you for 2011.

However, you are in your FIFTH year as a student, so 2011 is the LAST year you are exempt from Social Security and Medicare taxes.

Make sure your employer understands this.
