This afternoon I'll be defending my thesis so I can obtain my Masters degree (so, super important day, right?)

My boyfriend of three years stumbled in just now, at 8:00am in the morning after a 2 day drinking and possible narcotics bender. If he stays out later than I do with friends it's usually for a day at most. I don't think he's cheating on me. I don't drink as often as I did when we first started dating three years ago. Just a 1-3 drinks on social occasions. He drinks at least 1 beer every night or every other night.

We have plans to pack up and move out to Seattle in about 3 weeks. He's already put in his 2 weeks notice at his job. I don't want to screw him over for work. But I'm also seeing that it might be more practical for us to split. We belong to a strong group of friends, and us breaking up would create tension in that group. Also our families are from the same home town, and our parents are friends.

What are the practical reasons for breaking up? Why are they surfacing now? What's this about his drinking?

Have you at all talked about this change of heart? How long have you felt this way?

Talk to him about this. Plus, the fact that you belong to a strong group of friends has nothing to do with your relationship. Same about parents. It's him that you are in relationship with - not them. Figure out exactly what it is that bothers you about this relationship and weather it's worth working things out or not.
