I am trying to help a friend who is Vietnamese, I wanted to get him a book and maybe CD's to help him with his English. He's extremely busy, doesn't have much time, he works, goes to school and takes care of a disabled wife and their children. So, practicality is key. I know nothing about this subject, what books are good or not, and so on. I was hoping someone could recommend a book that would help and be practical for his busy life.

Also, can anyone recommend where to search for free ESL courses offered locally? I don't live in the same city as he does, but I want to help him. Not sure where to start.
