When did you take the test? How long are your periods normally? Could just be off cycles, but you might want to try one more test, being sure to follow the directions carefully.

If negative, you could wait and see what your period is like next month or see your doctor if you are still concerned about a possible pregnancy.

If you normally have regular periods, I would see the doctor for a pregnancy blood test. The results you get from that will let you know what the next step would be... either start on prenatal vitamins because a pregnancy is confirmed, or look for another possible cause for having irregular cycles all of a sudden.

What else could cause it to be shorter besides being pregnant?

Are you on any sort of hormonal birth control? That can sometimes alter cycles, even if it hasn't previously. Might be a hormonal imbalance that has started, or has just started to show symptoms at this time. Might be due to any physical/emotional changes... weight changes, for example, or extreme stress. At times there may be no obvious reason that is determined... just an irregular cycle or two and then things go back as they were.
