I am installing a new toilet with PVC piping under the floor with limited space. From the flange, my 3" pipe extends vertically downward about two feet to a sweeping elbow which connects to the main drain about 10 feet away. I installed my 2" vent about 6" beneath the flange, extending rearward (horizontally) to the wall behind where the toilet will be and then up vertically through the wall and through the roof. My local inspector says this should be wet vented. I do not understand.

Wet vent is a pipe that serves both draining waste and venting air. Unless I am reading you wrong, you have a wet vent. How did you connect to the 3" with your 2" vent, what did you use?

Can you post drawing of what you are doing ?

In the interim: if it is NOT wet vented that there should be no problem. You just have extra vent and that should be a "plus" for the system rather than violation of the Code. Thanks. Milo

Let me show you how we wet our bath installations in my area,(see image) If your lavatory is vented and drains into the same pipe as your toilet you are already wet vented and there is no need to run another. Good luck, Tom

In case it isn't already clear, it sounds like the inspector wants you to connect a sink or a tub drain to the toilet vent (assuming sink drain doesn't connect into the toilet drain close enough)?

Otherwise, if this still doesn't make sense, give the inspector a call and ask him to clarify things as each state's code can vary quite a bit from standard. If your inspector is a super creep, just call another towns' inspector and ask him... most are glad to help with simple questions, OK?

That's what I'm picturing too Milo. I would quess the inspector would want to see a wet vent to keep the toilet vent "clean".

In my area, our inspector won't allow us to vent a toilet in this manner (in the vertical tailpiece.) We have to vent the toilet via the horizontal section after the closet bend with a wye rolled above center line. However, if we are using the vent as a wet vent, we don't even have to roll it up anymore, due to the sink, etc, keeping the vent "clear". But Im stubborn, so I still always roll it up.:)
