A red fan symbol appears in upper right corner of thermostat frame and err... 40 flashes on screen

The orange/red led fan symbol indicates emergency heat is active. This could be because it is too cold outside for the heat pump to produce heat or you may have accidentally selected "emer heat" as your heat source. Look to see what is active on the lower left side of the screen under the "System" heading. If you see "Emer Heat" and it isn't colder than mid to low 20's you have probably activated emergency heat. Simply touch the "system" button and then select heat. The orange fan symbol should disappear.
